Faulty Approaches Episode 2: Timing (HD VIDEO)

Friday, July 30th, 2010

UND CFI’s Mike Lents and Anthony Bottini team up again to bring to you the second episode of the four part series, “Faulty Approaches and Landings.” This episode focuses on timing considerations that could impact you and your aircraft during any phase of the approach and landing. This episode will describe different timing errors, how to make small corrections for a safe landing and when to perform a go-around should the errors cause the approach to depart from a normal, stabilized approach. The specific errors covered include the High Roundout, the Late or Rapid Roundout, Ballooning and Bouncing. Enjoy this latest AeroCast episode and stay tuned for episode 3 of the Faulty Approach series. Thanks goes out this time to Shane Petersen for sharing some amazing photos from the his trip to the far east.

Faulty Approaches Episode 1: Energy Management (HD VIDEO)

Monday, May 3rd, 2010

As a recent addition to the FAA Airplane Flying Handbook, UND Aerospace has decided to tackle the Faulty Approach and Landing on this episode of the UND AeroCast. This episode is meant to shed some light on that grey area during many approaches when the pilot has to decide, based on the airplane’s current state, if the approach can safely continue with minor corrections or if its time to call an unstable approach and go around. UND Aerospace CFI, Anthony Bottini uses an in-depth script written by UND CFI Mike Lents to outline various factors that could cause any approach to be considered Faulty. As the first episode in a four part series, the instruction will be geared towards faulty approach concepts that involve the pilot’s Energy Management skills. As always the UND AeroCast staff would like to thank our latest Fan Photo contributor, Rachel Fish, for her photos of the UND Piper Cub with floats. Stay tuned for episode number two!

UND Standardization: Soft-Field Approach and Landing

Thursday, July 17th, 2008

Back for more, UND Lead Flight Instructor, Mike Lents, shares all he knows about making a safe and effective Soft-Field Approach and Landing on soft or rough surfaces. Mike’s information parallels the procedures set forth by the UND Aerospace Warrior Standardization manual and will guide the pilot from initial approach to final touchdown. Remember, its not all even, level pavement out there - from time to time a pilot must set the airplane down properly on what could be considered “less than ideal” runway conditions. Thanks a bunch to Jennifer for her awesome flying photos and to Ryan Carlson (writer and narrator of the Spin Awareness Training episode) for his video sign-off. Enjoy the episode and leave us a comment on our iTunes page and let us know what you think. As always, stay subscribed for more!

UND Standardization: Short-Field Approach and Landing

Friday, June 27th, 2008

Lead Flight Instructor, Mike Lents, gets the UND AeroCast started with landing standardization by introducing the Short-Field Approach and Landing. This episode is chock-full of footage of Mike performing textbook short-field landings at several short runways in North Dakota - runways of course, that many of you UND Aerospace students will have to make landings at from time to time. The information presented in this AeroCast episode was gathered from the UND Aerospace Warrior Standardization manual and is designed to give UND Aerospace students, as well as all of our dedicated non-UND viewers, a chance to have a look at a high performance Short-Field landing before actually attempting it for the first time. Don’t forget, even if it isn’t your first Short-Field Landing attempt, the UND AeroCast is a great refresher before going out and practicing with your instructor. Enjoy the episode and stay tuned for future quality UND Aerospace training videos…..have fun and fly safe!!

UND Standardization: The Holding Pattern

Monday, May 5th, 2008

Here’s a great addition to any instrument pilot’s IFR training library. UND Flight Instructor, Anthony Bottini, teaches the instrument student about the IFR Holding Pattern as outlined in the UND Standardization Manual. This episode is similar to the “Precision Approaches” episode in that it teaches UND IFR Standardization and not necessarily UND airplane-specific standardization. So, just realize that specific aircraft operating procedures may vary and that students should reference the UND Standardization manual for the aircraft that they will be flying during the holding maneuver. This episode will take a pilot through set-up, visualization and execution of a proper holding pattern so that the IFR rated pilot will always be confident while performing any type of holding pattern that ATC throws at them. Stay tuned for further IFR standardization videos from the UND AeroCast and if any of you viewers out there have any questions about the episode, feel free to ask them below. Thanks to Rob and Matt for the great video sign-off and to Jeff for the amazing contrast in flying photos - he sent in some photos that went from desert flying, to snowy mountain flying, and then back to more desert flying. Thanks Jeff!
